Chemicals to Avoid
DON'T BUY PRODUCTS WITH THESE INGREDIENTS

"Remember that even if you are not directly exposed to the cleaning product, the
chemicals that go down the drain, from the bathtub, sink, and washing machine,
may come back to you in small traces in your drinking water. The water purification
system is usually unable to remove all impurities."
cleaning / household
01
Benzene, Toluene, Xylene, Methanol,
and Ethylbenzene
These chemicals are known carcinogens and damage your nervous system. (Source)
These are also known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
04
Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride
Used as "a disinfectant in many antibacterial products and is also found in most all-purpose cleaners, this chemical can be highly irritating to the skin and lungs. In water, it is extremely toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms." (Source).
06
PFAS (Forever Chemicals)
PFAS are man-made chemicals used in various industrial and consumer products to repel water, stains, and grease (Source). "Small doses have been linked to cancer, reproductive and immune system harm, and other diseases."(Source)
AVOID:
PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate)
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid)
Look for ingredient names for PFAS such as ‘perfluoro'.
These chemicals are found in carpet cleaners, non-stick cookware, grease-proofing products, floor cleaning products.
05
C9-11 Ethoxylates
Found in all-purpose cleaners to remove dirt. "Exposure to this ingredient can irritate the skin and eyes and cause allergic reactions. It is also suspected to be carcinogenic due to a potential byproduct, 1,4-dioxane. It decomposes poorly, leading to pollution in rivers and oceans, where they harm fish and other aquatic life" (Source).
07
Lye & sulfuric acid | Ammonia
Lye and sulfuric acid are used in drain cleaners. Their "fumes can burn skin and eyes and damage your digestive tract, kidneys, and liver" (Source). Both have cruel effects on fish when ending up in waterways - being designated 'chronically toxic' for aquatic organisms "its effects on common freshwater fish, such as brown trout include: 'Burns on external skin of gills and abundant formation of mucus. Fishes die by suffocation because of the slow destruction of the respiratory organs.'"

Ammonia "is corrosive, which means it damages or destroys things it comes into contact with. This includes the cells in your body. Exposure to a lot of it can burn your eyes, nose, and throat. Even smaller amounts can make you cough and irritate your nose and throat." (Source)
Ammonia contributes to water and air pollution, soil acidification and eutrophication, toxicity to animals and marine life (Source).
03
Synthetic Dyes
They "are chemically stable and resistant to degradation, allowing them to persist in the environment for long periods and accumulate in soil and water bodies." (Source)
They are "toxic to aquatic organisms, causing death, growth problems, and reproductive disorders; they promote algal blooms that deplete oxygen from water bodies, killing fish and other aquatic life. Degradation of dyes can produce even more toxic byproducts, increasing environmental risks. They contaminate groundwater used for drinking water, threatening human and animal health." (Source)
Look for UNDYED products only.
08
Benzalkonium Chloride
This chemical is a "disinfectant and preservative in various toxic cleaning products. It's highly toxic to aquatic organisms, causing reproductive abnormalities, cellular damage, and even death in certain fish, crustaceans, and algae, even at low concentrations. Residues can persist in sediments and soils, which negatively impact ecosystems. For humans, benzalkonium chloride can cause respiratory irritation and allergies." (Source)
Ideally: Cleaning/Household products should only contain natural ingredients you've heard of and know are 100% safe (e.g. baking soda, vinegar, essential oils, saponified oils, glycerin, etc.)
beauty
01
Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen (Source).

In beauty products, "formaldehyde can be added directly, or more often, it can be released from preservatives such as
-
Quaternium-15
-
DMDM hydantoin
-
Imidazolidinyl urea
-
Diazolidinyl urea & polyoxymethylene urea
-
Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate,
-
Bromopol
-
Glyoxal" (Source).

Choose products that are labelled 'formaldehyde-free' and are organic.
04
"Fragrance"
"Fragrance" or "Parfum" is the hidden ingredient that includes carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxins and environmental toxins (Source). Fragrance can include phthalates (2).

Companies are NOT required to disclose the exact ingredients under 'fragrance' (Source) so you will not know the exact toxins and contaminants in your product. Fragrance is rated an 8/10 (10=worst) on EWG (Source).

Choose essential-oil scented products or fragrance-free products instead.
07
Talc
Talc can be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen (Source). It can cause respiratory irritation in infants, as well as organ toxicity in the lungs and female genitals/reproductive system (Source).

Talc can be found in:
-
Baby powder
-
Body and shower products
-
Lotions
-
Feminine hygiene products
-
Eyeshadow
-
Foundation
-
Lipstick
-
Deodorants
-
Face masks

Avoid:
-
Talcum powder
-
Cosmetic talc

Buy products that are talc-free to be safe.
02
Phthalates
Phthalates are used to soften plastic.

"Because phthalates are not chemically bound to the plastic they are used in, they migrate out over time and contaminate indoor dust and air. They're known for their ability to disrupt the hormonal system, with extensive laboratory research concluding that exposure to phthalates reduces testosterone levels and leads to an array of male reproductive problems." (Source).

Avoid plastics in building materials, food storage, products and toys to reduce exposure. (Source) Buy makeup made from plants.
05
Coal Tar Dyes
Look for 'C.I. followed by a five digit number (e.g. CI 56675). These dyes are used 'extensively' in cosmetics.
Coal tar (and coal tar dyes) are recognized as a human carcinogen (Source).

"These colours may be contaminated with low levels of heavy metals and some are combined with aluminum substrate. Aluminum compounds and many heavy metals are toxic to the brain. Some colours are not approved as food additives, yet they are used in cosmetics that may be ingested, like lipstick" (Source).

Coal tar itself also includes carcinogens like benzene and toulene (Source).
09
Aluminum
Found in cosmetics and antiperspirants/deodorants, aluminum should be avoided in all areas.

Avoid products with these ingredients:
-
CI 77000 (Aluminum Powder)
-
Aluminum Lake dyes (e.g. "Red 40 Lake")
-
Magnesium Aluminum Silicate
-
Aluminum Tristearate
-
Aluminum Stearate
-
Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium Octachlorohydrex, Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate
-
Aluminum Chloride
Excellent report with more information on products to avoid: (Source)

"Post-mortem examinations of humans with Alzheimer's disease sufferers show that many have higher amounts of aluminum than normal in their brains. Aluminum is not normally found in healthy brain tissue and researchers do not know how or why the metal accumulates in the brain" (Source)

Look for deodorants in cardboard tubes that are aluminum-free.
03
Parabens
Parabens contribute to endocrine disruption, reproductive harm, cancer, skin irritation (Source).

"Parabens can act like the hormone estrogen in the body and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems affecting male and female reproductive system functioning, reproductive development, fertility and birth outcomes." (Source).

"Parabens are also linked to ecological harm, as low levels of butylparaben can kill coral"
(Source).
06
Petrolatum & PEGs
Petrolatum, aka mineral jelly, can be contaminated with PAHs, a carcinogen; in the EU, petrolatum is considered a carcinogen itself (Source).

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols) can be contaminated with carcinogens ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane; 1,4-dioxane accumulates in the environment and does not break down easily, so it continues to be a contaminant even after use (Source).

This is what you might see on ingredient lists: PEG-40 Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Laureth-4, and numbered PEGs like PEG-4, PEG-8, and PEG-400

Avoid any products with PEGs or Petrolatum in the ingredient list to be safe.
08
Heavy metals
Heavy metals are carcinogens and cause numerous other health problems. Ingredient lists will not include heavy metals so obviously, so here's what to look for to avoid them.

If you see any of these on the ingredient list, do not buy:
-
Lead acetate
-
Chromium / Chromium Oxide
-
Thimerosal
-
Hydrogenated cotton seed oil
-
Sodium hexametaphosphate
-
D&C Red 6

Lead is commonly found in lipstick, especially red. "Extremely bright or pigmented products, especially reds and metallics, are more likely to have metal contaminants because of the pigments used" (Source)

Be careful with mineral-based pigments. "They can be naturally contaminated with lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc., because those metals are present in the earth where the minerals are mined. For instance, iron oxide pigments (for reds, yellows, browns) might have trace lead. Titanium dioxide (used for white color or in sunscreen) can have trace lead or arsenic from ore." (Source)

Look for plant or spice-based pigments instead.
